Wolff irritated with tyre rumours: 'Somebody says that, he has no clue'

Pirelli introduced thinner tyres for the Spanish Grand Prix weekend to prevent overheating of the Italian rubber. Some F1 insiders suggested that this was mainly done to favour Mercedes. They believe Mercedes insisted on the thinner rubber to get over their tyre problems.

"Rubbish, Wolff said responding to the allegations. Speaking with Motorsport.com, the Silver Arrows team boss said: “All teams had blistering, very heavy blistering at the test in Barcelona. And for that reason, Pirelli changed the thickness of the tyre to prevent blistering, and they've been successful at preventing the blistering because we haven't seen it on any car today. I don't know where suddenly this rumour comes out”.

According to Wolff, the tyres are not the only reason that Mercedes suddenly scored a 1-2 in the qualification. “We just had the car and the tyres in the right window today,” the Austrian explained. "Maybe the next race will not work again. That's part of racing. More important is that our updates work well. Every team brought upgrades, but in F1 there's no such thing where you put an upgrade on the car and it goes half a second quicker. If Somebody says that, he has no clue."
