Horner: "We saw fifty small cuts in Verstappen's tires"

The risk of a blown tire for Max Verstappen in the closing stages of the British Grand Prix would have been very high if he didn't make a second pit stop. The Dutchman's tires were severely worn, so according to team boss Christian Horner it was justifiable to make a pit stop.
Red Bull Racing is on the receiving end of criticism for the decision, because Verstappen could have won the race due to the blown tire for Lewis Hamilton in the final lap. However, the Dutchman's tires were also at the end of their life, Horner assures in conversation with the Italian Motorsport.com.
"At the end, you never know what would have been the best choice", Horner emphasises. "After the last stop, we saw fifty small cuts in Max" tires. "That confirms that the car had driven over rubble".
According to Horner, if Red Bull had let Verstappen continue, there would have been the risk that the Dutchman could have lost his second place. In the closing stages of the race, Lewis Hamilton, Valtteri Bottas and also Carlos Sainz struggled with flat front tires on the left side. "It was really on edge", he realises. "We'd rather be happy with what we've achieved than angry at what we've potentially lost". (photo: Red Bull Content Pool / Getty Images)
