Toyoharu Tanabe looks back on the Grand Prix of the Eifel with satisfaction. Especially the performances of Max Verstappen and Pierre Gasly appeal to Honda's top man. The Dutchman finished second while the Frenchman finished third at the Nürburgring.
Verstappen was beaten by Mercedes in qualifying, but came second in the race due to a Bottas failure. "I think he was able to get stable results," begins a satisfied Tanabe versus AS-Web. "AlphaTauri also put up a strong fight with a good Gasly. This result will encourage us and the team for the next six races".
We decided to stop his power unit
The failure of Alexander Albon aroused some surprise. Tanabe explains the reason for bringing the Thai inside during the race. "I think it was a stepping stone. The cooler was damaged and there was a water leak, so we decided to stop the power source before it was affected".
Tanabe didn't have a lot of problems with the two day system. "Since qualifying mode was discontinued, it has been impossible to use qualifying and the race correctly. In that sense, the conditions were even tougher, but I think we have been able to make good use of the knowledge we have gained so far and finish the race smoothly".
"We were able to cope well with the cold"
Especially the cold weather played a role during the race, where a cold wind came around the corner. Despite the fact that Verstappen complained about cold tires during the safety car, Tanabe didn't experience many difficulties. "It was a very cold condition, but we were able to handle it well," concluded an excited Tanabe. (Photo: Red Bull Content Pool/Getty Images)
