Report VT3 | Bottas the fastest, McLaren quick, Verstappen sixth

The third free practice session for the Italian Grand Prix is done. The fastest time was driven by Valtteri Bottas, the top three consists of Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris. Max Verstappen set the sixth fastest time.

As is often the case in the third and final practice it took a long time before there was any action on the track. However, after about twenty minutes the first teams came out with the three Ferrari teams. However, they were far from being able to set serious times compared to the Honda and Mercedes teams.

Lewis Hamilton and Bottas set fast times, but Verstappen was also quick. He drove to the seventh time first, only to make it a fourth time in his second timed lap. Esteban Ocon in the Renault was just faster.

Set-up Verstappen seems better

Verstappen then sat down for a while and drove to the fastest time, on the yellow tyre. The fact that his time was eight-tenths of a second faster than on Friday, in particular, is hopeful. The Dutchman complained a lot about the set-up of his car on Friday afternoon, but it seems to be better for each other now.

Hamilton had trouble getting under the time of Verstappen and he only just managed to do so. However, Bottas' time was too much to ask and the drivers, with about thirteen minutes to go, came out en masse for the qualification simulation. Most of that simulation, however, was forfeit because Ricciardo caused a code red.

Ricciardo: "I have an issue"

Suddenly we saw a picture of the Australian who had parked his car in the grass. It turned out that this had to do with a problem with his car, which was also in neutral. However, there was no damage, so he seems to be 'just' able to take part in qualifying later this afternoon. (Photo: Getty Images/Red Bull Content Pool)
