Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso are engaged in a battle to secure a seat at the Racing Point Formula 1 team. According to the Gazetta dello Sport, both F1 champions are interested in driving for the British racing team in 2021.
The Italian sports newspaper writes that both Vettel and Alonso are in talks with Lawrence Stroll, owner of the team, to join Racing Point after 2020. The F1 team, which will change name to the Aston Martin factory team from next year onwards, will in that case have to say goodbye to one of their current drivers.
Although the twenty-one-year-old Lance Stroll is the owner's son, the newspaper reports that the young Canadian is likely to leave the team if a deal can be made with either Vettel or Alonso. Sergio Perez makes an important financial contribution of approximately € 13.3 million.
Renault is not an option for Vettel or Alonso
Vettel and Alonso have also been linked to Renault's F1 team in the past, but the drivers are no longer interested in that option. Both gentlemen, who jointly account for six world titles, have a greater confidence in Stroll's project than they see opportunities with the French car manufacturer.
