Christian Horner is widely acclaimed for his skilful and calm leadership style. You can hardly catch Max Verstappen's team boss on an emotional goof or an angry mood, but behind the scenes that does indeed happen. Horner reveals how he got into a tantrum due to a collision between Ricciardo and Verstappen.
In an interview with former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard, Horner reflects on the few moments when he had to get very angry with people within his team. The last time it was needed was just after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, when teammates Verstappen and Ricciardo drove each other off the track during a promising race. Horner tells how he reacted very aggressively on an evaluation interview.
"The last time I got really angry was after the clash between Verstappen and Ricciardo in Baku, 2018. During the evaluation interview I lost all my composure. I went completely out of my mind. I remember that Adrian (Newey) was also in the same room and even he looked at me with his eyes wide open, he was a bit shocked. Daniel and Max looked at me as if I were some kind of silly school teacher. I will never forget that moment."
Horner invented Red Bull Racing's leadership style himself
Horner says that he has developed his own way of managing over the years. "When I first started in sports, I saw figures like Flavio Briatore and Ron Dennis. Those were very outspoken personalities and really opposites. I thought, "If they are like that, I can do it my own way." And I did that. I never really did management training, I invented it all myself. I believe that communication is central to a successful organisation."
