McLaren will become an exception to the rule in 2021 and will be allowed to make changes to its frame before the next racing season. Team boss Andreas Seidl confirmed this news after uncertainty came up about the engine change for the British racing team in 2021.
The Woking team will switch to Mercedes engines from next season. At first, this was not a problem, but since the 2020 chassis will be used in 2021, there were doubts about the possibility of a switch to Mercedes power unit.
A new engine needs modifications to the chassis. The design of the motor is different, so the casing must be adjusted to install the power unit. Because the 2020 frame will also be used next year, this could have put a spanner in McLaren’s plans.
“The 2021 regulation changes will not change our move to the Mercedes engines. We are allowed to make the necessary adjustments to the car to make this happen,” the outfit’s CEO wrote on the McLaren website.
The British outfit has managed to avoid another year with Renault engines. The French engine maker had previously indicated that they would focus on making adjustments to their existing power unit, rather than bringing more upgrades during the upcoming season. (Photo: McLaren F1 Media)
